“Moomins and the Comet Chase”, the first Nordic stereoscopic 3D feature film was screened to a VIP audience in Helsinki this Monday, August 2nd 2010 at a special red carpet gala premiere.

Icelandic singer and songwriter Björk, who composed and performed the film’s theme song attended the red carpet event with her daughter and posed with Moomins characters to the press and members of the public.

Stereoscape is the stereoscopic 3D producer of the Moomins film. Producer Ilkka Peltola and other members of the Stereoscape team attended the gala premiere. Björk´s childhood favourite character was Snufkin!

Moomins and the comet chase premieres with Bjork in Finland

The much-anticipated Finnish audience premiere of Moomins in 3D is taking place 6th August, 2010 at cinemas nationwide. We are delighted to announce that Bjork, who performs the film’s theme song, will be flying to Finland for the red carpet VIP screening of the film earlier in the week. Stereoscape has been responsible for converting the film from regular 2D animation to stereoscopic 3D.

Producer Aarne Norberg joins Stereoscape

Aarne Norberg has been appointed as producer at Stereoscape. From producing to directing and screenwriting, Norberg has over 20 years of experience in working with feature films, television series and advertising. He has also worked as a lecturer as well as executive director at Villilä studios, a TV and movie production centre in western Finland. Norberg’s topical research on digital online distribution provides interesting insights into the changes in the production structure, value chain and profit generation models of the film industry.

Norberg is eager to apply his wide experience to the rapidly growing field of 3D. “3D is reshaping the media & entertainment industry. Joining one of the leading Nordic experts in stereoscopic 3D is a great opportunity to develop this field and provide a fresh approach to creating value in the business”, Norberg says.

The film and entertainment industries are going through radical structural reshaping due to the possibilities and challenges posed by digital technologies, ranging from online distribution to crowdsourcing and social media. Stereoscopic 3D films are providing a much-needed cash injection to the film value chain, but the medium also offers significant creative possibilities to filmmakers.

“We have seen some fantastic examples of what can be done with 3D, but there is so much more to look forward to. Stereoscopic 3D presents opportunities giving birth to new genres, new ways of making movies, and it is this vast range of open possibilities that I find exciting”, Norberg continues.

Stereoscopic 3D – a future export product

Stereoscape is among 20 creative companies selected by Finnish export organisation Finpro to their new creative industries spearhead project “Luovimo”. The scheme objective is to help top creative companies from Finland to internationalize, as well as facilitating innovation and cross-fertilisation among the participating companies.

Since a private equity investor became the company’s principal owner in 2009, Stereoscape’s focus has been in strengthening internally and developing expertise in S3D, aiming at growth and internationalization.

“There is every possibility for stereoscopic 3D expertise to become an important part of Finnish cultural exportation. Global demand for 3D expertise is increasing while experienced professionals are hard to find – we get to operate in an international market from the very beginning. Talented professionals, an open-minded attitude and the courage to push boundaries make Stereoscape a serious player both in Finland and abroad”, Norberg says.

S3D short film in development with RealReality, Belgium

Stereoscape is at an advanced stage of development with Kanal, a 10-minute short film co-production with Brussels based 3D computer graphics company RealReality Sprl. The short film represents the beginning of a planned longer-term relationship between the two companies.

The 10-minute Kanal will be directed by Jean-Pierre Berckmans and is suitable for all ages. A combination of stereoscopic 3D animation, S3D live action footage and motion capture, the film will tell the heart-warming story of a starving man and his chance encounter with an almighty stranger.

Working with motion capture and stereoscopic 3D footage is a highly novel process. Stereoscape will be in charge of the live action stereoscopic 3D elements of the film. The live action photography is scheduled to commence in Finland in autumn 2010 subject to financing being confirmed. Meanwhile, the production of the animated elements in the film has already begun at RealReality’s studios in Belgium.

Stereoscape allekirjoitti Cannesissa aiesopimuksen EUR 10 miljoonan 3D Ibsen-adaptaation suomalaisesta osatuottajuudesta

Stereoscape Oy, Muumipeikko ja punainen pyrstötähti -elokuvan stereoskooppinen tuottaja, on ryhtymässä kansainvälisen 3D-yhteistuotannon suomalaiseksi osatuottajaksi. Kyseessä on Ibsenin Nukkekotiin pohjautuva, Christmas Tale for Adults -niminen elokuva, jota tähdittävät venäläiset supertähdet Aleksandr Domogarov, Anna Snatkina ja Aleksey Guskov.

Elokuvan päätuottaja on valkovenäläinen Cinemarec-tuotantoyhtiö, ja muut osatuottajat tulevat Iso-Britanniasta, Italiasta ja Unkarista. Elokuvan käsikirjoituksen on kirjoittanut Ibsenin näytelmän pohjalta Diamara Nizhnikovskaya, joka myös ohjaa elokuvan. Kuvaaja on Cinema Paradison kuvannut italialainen Blasco Giutero. Suurin osa elokuvasta tullaan kuvaamaan unkarilaisessa elokuvastudiossa.

Stereoscape neuvottelee Cinemarecin kanssa stereoskooppisen 3D-osuuden toteuttamisesta elokuvaan, sekä elokuvan skandinaavisten luonto- ja kaupunkimaisemien kuvaamisesta Suomessa. Elokuvaa suunnitellaan kansainväliseen ensi-iltaan jouluksi 2011.
